The Central Laboratory for Date Palm Research & Development



1. Breeding and Biotechnology Res. Section .

- In vitro vegetative multiplication of selected local and introduced varieties to be grown in the new Reclaimed areas and rehabitate old plantation.

- Introducing new varieties as plantlets via tissue culture in order to avoid pest dissemination and evaluating them in most suitable regions for their adaptability.

- In vitro studies on somatic embryogenesis conservation of date palm.

- Genetic finger- printing of important varieties of date palm and establish their relation among them.

- Produce secondary products using plant tissue culture technique of date palm which will have future prospect in medicinal Industry.

2. Agropractice and Horticulture Res. Section .

- Evaluating male palms with metaxinc characters that could be used to manipulate fruit production.

- Studies on the effect of soil conditioner and bio fertilizer on plants produced via tissue culture.

- Plant all the main roadsides of Giza Agriculture Research Centre farm. with full grown date palms. These trees will be used for future studies on the crown and fruit management.

3. Plant Protection Res. Section PlantPathology & Entomology

- Survey and study the date palm diseases and their distribution, their pathogenicity and mode of infection in order to advice the farmers.

- Surveying and studying the insects which attack date palm trees in the off-shoot or in the productive stages, or in the stors and methods of their central.

4. Mechanization Res. Section

Mechanization research activities deal with all aspect of engineering and design of tools, equipment and machinery which help the date palm production and reduce labor cost. These equipment such as, special ladders, pollen grains extraction, pollinators for mechanical pollination. This section is jointly working in – cooperation with Agriculture Engineering Institute of ARC.

5. Mechanization Res. Section

The use of advanced-technology in the field of product research which includes handling, processing and marketing in order to increase the exportation. Special pilot plant for date handling has been established in El-Kharga Oesis. The total exported whole dates are more than eleven thousand tons and their value is about 60-70 million Egyptian pound.

6.  Processing and Industrial Non–Fruit Date Palm Res. Section

The task of this Research Section is to use the up – to – date technology in the industrial development of Date Palm Products (excluding date fruits) such as: trunk, leaves, leaflets, sheath fiber, fruit stalks, leaf midrib either used traditionally or more developed products. Products such as: household, crates, ropes mats, baskets, paper, cellulose, artificial wood and Compost …. Etc

-  The use of the by-products of the processing plants to produce high quality animal feed.


7. Technology Transfer and Training Res. Sec.

Conduct training, and serve as a training facility to meet the scarcity of well trained professionals. Promote research and extension service to provide technology transfer between research and date growers. The CLDPRD had conducted 27 extension program at Quna, Aswan, New-valley, Sinai, and Sewa. Also conducted three training program at Giza, Aswin and Matrouh governarates. The CLDPRD had conducted training programmes for his own workers in the computer science and English languish.
